How to Prepare Your Child for Grade 12 English

Literacy is an integral part of a child’s education. Excelling in English allows students to become effective communicators and writers, opening many doors for both academics as well as for future employment. It is important to prepare our children and set them up for success. As your child approaches grade 12, they are approaching university or college applications, acceptances and attending their university or college of choice. Preparing them for grade 12 English is important to maintain their grades at a high standard, not only in English, but their writing and communication skills will translate across many subjects. Your child is never too young to start preparing. If you are looking for tips and tricks to assist your child and prepare them for grade 12, continue reading!

Create Good Habits

First and foremost, it is important that your child creates good habits. These good habits should include keeping a schedule of their due dates, attending all of their classes, taking notes, completing their homework, readings and assignments on time. These habits and routines will keep your child well organized throughout their academic years, preventing them from waiting last minute and becoming overwhelmed. This results in unnecessary pressure and being ill-prepared- which is not a recipe for success. Keeping a schedule and adhering to it helps create good habits that set your child up for success.

Attend Office Hours

Attending office hours is a great way for students to obtain additional support and advance their learning. This is private time where students can gain additional insight, information and advice from their teacher. Some students may feel slightly shy to attend office hours, or they may prefer to hang out with their friends than receive additional support, however it is important to instill good habits and encourage your child to attend. They should not only attend office hours once they are in grade 12, but they should attend all throughout high school. This allows your child to further develop their skills and makes attending office hours habitual for them.

Read and Write for Fun

Encourage your child to spend some of their free time reading and writing. Young adolescents may prefer to spend their time watching tv or playing video games, however finding a book that is tailored to their interests can help develop thee habit of reading. Habitual reading can really help them advance in their reading skills and overall literacy skills which are important for being successful in English class. Additionally, encourage your child to write every day. Starting small with a personal journal and one sentence a day, can eventually blossom into your child writing paragraphs and pages on subjects that may interest them. Practicing those writing skills at home can help your child become more comfortable with writing and become better writers. Encourage them by finding a book or writing topic that is of interest to them, to keep your child enthused and engaged.

Complete All Readings and Homework

Ensure your child is completing all of their assigned readings and homework. Literature can have a lot of in-depth themes and other ideas that may not be very obvious. By completing all of the assigned readings and work, students can begin to develop their skills to notice these themes and ideas independently.
